The name Caleuche (pronounced ka-lay-OO-chay) comes from a legend that originates in the fishing villages of the archipelago of southern Chile. The Ghost Ship, El Caleuche, is said to sometimes appear to sailors in the middle of a raging storm, glowing with an eerie white light, and creating a momentary calm. Any sailor who sees El Caleuche knows that he is doomed either to a watery grave or to an eternity of service on the crew of the Ghost Ship.
We chose the name because we like the story that goes with it (see the Legend of Caleuche), and because we think that it represents the richness and fun of the Spanish language and Spanish and Latin American culture.
We believe understanding between cultures is vital in today's chaotic world. Learning about a different culture gives a person a different perspective on that culture, on the world in general, and even on his/her own culture. Language is one of the core elements in any culture, and being able to communicate in the language is the ultimate path to understanding the culture. But there is a lot more to Spanish and Latin American culture than language, and it is some of these other aspects that give the culture its flavor.
